Mike Rutledge, a long-time employee of Oxbow Calcining, has spent 35 years at the plant managing material. It ranges from 40,000 to 120,000 tons in the yard. Oxbow Calcining supplies petroleum coke products to the aluminum industry. Managing such vast inventories has posed significant challenges. To address these issues, Mike turned to SITECH Louisiana and their Trimble technology.
Over the past four months, this technology has revolutionized their inventory management by precisely measuring the base of stockpiles and ensuring that consumed material is accurately accounted for. This innovation has eliminated the problem of leaving extra material in the yard and has significantly streamlined operations.
Beyond inventory management, the Trimble unit has proven invaluable in other projects. For instance, during the installation of a water pipe for a rain burn control system, the unit’s precise measurements ensured the pipe’s location was accurately recorded. This data will be crucial for future reference, regardless of how much material covers the area. Despite Mike’s initial unfamiliarity with survey equipment, SITECH Louisiana provided extensive support and training.
This helped make the technology accessible and easy to use. With a permanent base station, a rover, and a handheld unit, Mike can now efficiently manage the stockpile yard.
